Vice President Pence to Break Senate Tie to Confirm Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary

Over the past several weeks, Democrats in the Senate have been doing their best to obstruct President Donald Trump’s agenda and deprive the country of necessary cabinet-level secretaries to keep the government functioning.

Democrats on the Senate Committee on Health have been doing everything in their power to delay President Trump’s pick to overhaul the failed Department of Education, school choice advocate Betsy DeVos. They’ve sent her unnecessary additional questions and demanded more information about her personal finances.

Two liberal Republicans have caved to their Democrat colleagues, Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, and will vote against Ms. DeVos. Now, Vice President Mike Pence will be forced to step in and break the 50-50 tie.

But the good news is, PBS reports that she will pass!

From PBS:

That will leave her with a tie vote if all other Republicans support her and all Democrats oppose her as expected, and will require Pence to put her over the top. A vice president breaking a tie on a Cabinet nomination would be a first in the history of the Senate, according to the Senate historian’s office.

DeVos isn’t the first of President Trump’s nominees to face Democrat obstruction. Democrats refused to attend committee votes on the nominees for the EPA and Treasury as well, meaning Republicans were forced to alter committee rules to approve all three nominees without a single Democrat present.

Although DeVos is likely to be confirmed, it is unfortunate that the Democrats have obstructed Trump’s cabinet nominees so much that Vice President Pence is forced to step in to break the tie.

Democrats always want to have it both ways. They want to scream and cry when Republicans “obstruct,” and act like heroes when they oppose nominees. Too bad they don’t have the numbers to stop it!
