Donald Trump Announces Plan to Head to Puerto Rico

President Trump is set to visit Puerto Rico, an American territory, next Tuesday.

The island was devastated by Hurricane Maria last week. In fact, many of the residents are still without power.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, the president said Tuesday was the earliest date he could visit the island because of efforts by first responders.

“I know many Puerto Ricans, and they’re great people and we have to help them. It really was devastated. Some people say, I read it this morning, it’s literally destroyed,” he stated. “The infrastructure was in bad shape as you know in Puerto Rico before the storm, and now in many cases, it has no infrastructure, so it’s, you’re really starting from almost scratch.”

Trump explained that recovery in Puerto Rico, unlike other areas damaged by hurricanes like Texas and Florida, is made more difficult by its location in the Caribbean.

“It’s very tough because it’s an island. In Texas, we can ship the trucks right out there, you know, we’ve got A-pluses on Texas and Florida and we will also on Puerto Rico, but the difference is this is an island sitting in the middle of an ocean, and it’s a big ocean, it’s a very big ocean, and I think we’re doing a really good job.”

Trump took criticism this week when instead of showing support to the victims of Hurricane Maria he tweeted that Puerto Rico was in “deep trouble,” citing the financial troubles of the territory and its “broken infrastructure.”
