Sessions Says NFL Kneelers Made ‘Big Mistake’

Attorney General Jeff Sessions attended a talk Tuesday about free speech in which he weighed in on the recent protests by NFL players during the national anthem.

Sessions, backing President Trump’s stance on the matter, said those who knelt made a “big mistake.”

“I agree that it’s a big mistake to protest in that fashion,” the attorney general said at Georgetown Law School.

While disagreeing with the context in which the protests took place, Sessions backed free speech rights, noting that protesters “aren’t subject to any prosecution.”

“The freedom of every individual player is paramount under the Constitution. It’s protected. And we have to protect it,” Sessions said. “People have a right to register their opinions, to protest … in any number of ways.”
