While Protesters Remove Confederate Monuments, Alabama Gets a Brand-New One

On Sunday, over 200 people gathered in an unveiling ceremony for a Confederate monument in Crenshaw County. David Coggins, a Sons of Confederate Veterans member, said the monument is “here to honor our Confederate dead, to honnor our ancestors.” Coggins went on to say, “We should all be proud of our Confederate ancestors.”

AL.com reports:

Speakers and attendees repeatedly stated that the memorial and ceremony were not responses to the racial discord currently gripping the nation.

They said it was just a coincidence that the date of the event was announced online shortly after a white nationalist ran over and killed a woman in Charlottesville, Virginia, following violent demonstrations there earlier this month.

The monument is located next to RV park, where it is joined by other Confederate memorials, which includes flags and replica cannons.

Just last week, Democrats presented legislation with the intent to ban Confederate monuments on federal property, but the new Confederate monument in Alabama would not be affected because it is on private land.
