Trump to Australian PM: ‘I Hate Taking’ Refugees, ‘I Guarantee You They are Bad’

On Thursday morning, transcripts of President Donald Trump’s initial phone calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia just days after his inauguration were published by The Washington Post. While broad strokes of the call had previously been reported, this is the first time the actual conversations have been revealed.

Technically, the president’s calls with foreign leaders are on the record, but the transcripts are not officially released until long after the fact.

Trump pushed back hard at Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on the topic of an Obama-era deal to agree to process 1,250 to 2,000 refugees.

“I hate taking these people,” Trump said. “I guarantee you they are bad. That is why they are in prison right now. They are not going to be wonderful people who go on to work for the local milk people.”

Turnbull tried to stress that Trump was misunderstanding the deal: not only were these economic refugees not from combat zones, but the United States only has to begin the process. The Americans can take in as many or as few refugees as they want at the end. Trump remained unmoved, though.

“Why haven’t you let them out?” he asked. “Why have you not let them into your society?”

“It is not because they are bad people,” Turnbull replied. “It is because, in order to stop people smugglers, we had to deprive them of the product. So we said if you try to come to Australia by boat, even if we think you are the best person in the world, even if you are a Noble [sic] Prize winning genius, we will not let you in.”

Turnbull was referring to an Australian law than blocks refugees who arrive by boat, with the idea that it will curb smuggling/human trafficking as well as potentially dangerous attempts at boat trips by the refugees themselves.

Trump liked the boat law, saying that the U.S. should enact it themselves, joking, “You are worse than I am.” But even after the specifics were explained to him, including how it complied with his travel ban executive order, he, if anything, got even more contentious.

“I have had it,” he said. “I have been making these calls all day and this is the most unpleasant call all day. Putin was a pleasant call. This is ridiculous.”
