House Republican Says Mueller Must Resign from Russia Probe

House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., has called on Robert Mueller, who is leading the Department of Justice’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, to resign.

Franks, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said that Mueller is in “clear violation of federal code” due to his “close friendship” with former FBI Director James Comey.

The violation, Franks said, is a conflict of interest that “fundamentally undermines” Mueller’s ability to faithfully execute the law as special counsel.

“Bob Mueller is in clear violation of federal code and must resign to maintain the integrity of the investigation into alleged Russian ties,” Franks said. “Those who worked under them have attested he and Jim Comey possess a close friendship, and they have delivered on-the-record statements effusing praise of one another.”

Franks based his allegations on a Fox News report in May that documented the close ties between Mueller and Comey, which date back to 2003.

The report found that Mueller, who is likely looking into President Donald Trump’s firing of Comey in May, once called Comey “one of the finest people I’ve ever met.”

A 2013 Washingtonian article added that Mueller was the “one person in government whom he (Comey) could confide in and trust: Bob Mueller.”

Franks said public statements of admiration between Mueller and Comey make it impossible to determine what Mueller’s true intentions are as special counsel.

“No one knows Mr. Mueller’s true intentions, but neither can anyone dispute that he now clearly appears to be a partisan arbiter of justice. Accordingly, the law is also explicitly clear: he must step down based on this conflict of interest,” Franks said.

Franks also cited reports revealing that multiple members of Mueller’s legal team have given political donations to Democrats, with some even giving directly to Hillary Clinton.

“Already, this investigation has become suspect – reports have revealed at least four members of Mueller’s team on the Russia probe donated to support Hillary Clinton for President, as President Trump pointed out. These obviously deliberate partisan hirings do not help convey impartiality,” Franks said.

“Until Mueller resigns, he will be in clear violation of the law, a reality that fundamentally undermines his role as Special Counsel and attending ability to execute the law,” he added.

Trump himself has called into question Mueller’s relationship with Comey.

The president said on Fox & Friends in June that Mueller was “very, very good friends with Comey, which is bothersome.”
