Trump Tweets Senate Must Go to 51 Vote Majority to Pass ‘Some Really Good Things’

On Friday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted a new statement in two parts, largely in response to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell essentially conceding the repeal of the Affordable Care Act after the failed vote early Friday morning:

The “skinny repeal” health care bill would have passed with 51 votes, which it was unable to get.

A 60 vote majority is required to invoke cloture, which is needed to end a filibuster. Before 1975, cloture required the same two-thirds majority that is needed to override the president’s veto.

Trump had tweeted a more immediate statement on the repeal vote early Friday morning:

AHIP, a national association of health plans, has cited the Trump administration’s non-commitment to paying ACA cost-sharing subsidies as a cause of the insurance exchanges’ instability, which, they say, could cause premiums to rise by 20%.
