Top FBI Official Reportedly Under Investigation Over Leaks

A new report claims that a top lawyer at the FBI is under investigation as the Justice Department seeks to find out who was been leaking information to the news media.

The website Circa said that FBI general counsel James A. Baker is being investigated for “allegedly leaking classified national security information to the media,” according to anonymous government officials.

FBI spokeswoman Carol Cratty told Circa it would not comment on the website’s report.

Circa said Baker was “a top suspect” in a “criminal” investigation, but admitted it did not know what the attorney had been suspected of leaking.

Sarah Isgur Flores, a spokeswoman for the Department of Justice, released a statement after the report came out, but did not address it directly.

“We have seen an astonishing increase in the number of leaks of classified national security information in recent months,” she said, noting that the department agrees with White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci that “these staggering number of leaks are undermining the ability of our government to function and to protect this country.”

She added that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said that “whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail.”

“… we will aggressively pursue leak cases wherever they may lead,” the statement from Flores said.

Baker was named the FBI’s general counsel in 2014 by former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by Trump in May. He had served as an associate deputy attorney general with a focus on national security and intelligence from 2009 to 2011.

Baker was one of the FBI officials consulted by Comey after his meetings with President Donald Trump. Comey later leaked memos detailing his version of those meetings to the media.

Circa further described Baker as a “close confidant” of Comey.

Circa’s report did not include any comments from Baker.

The revelation came days after Fox News reported that Sessions, who has recently been on the receiving end of multiple Twitter barbs from Trump, will soon announce investigations into leaks coming out of the Trump administration.

Fox News quoted an unnamed official as saying that the announcement of an intensified investigation into the leaks has “been in the works for some time and will most likely happen sometime in the next week.”

The focus of the investigation is “news reports that publicized sensitive intelligence material, according to officials who have been briefed on the matter,” Fox said.
