Two Israeli Police Officers Killed in Jerusalem’s Old City Near Western Wall

On Friday, at Lions Gate in the Old City area of Jerusalem, two Israeli police officers were shot and killed by a group of three assailants. Police officers then gave chase to the shooters, killing them in the shootout.

According to a statement from Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency, the shooters, aged 19 to 29, were not previously on the radar of the country’s security services. Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that the shooters, who he identified as terrorists, were “Israeli Arabs from Umm al-Fahm in northern Israel.”

Part of the area around where the shooting took place has been closed off by police.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is within this perimeter, so local Muslim’s Friday prayers will be affected. The nearby Western Wall is outside of the perimeter and is unaffected for the time being.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack during a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
