Trump Says Chinese President Xi ‘Could Do a Little Bit More’ When it Comes to North Korea

During a press conference on Thursday, President Donald Trump complimented his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, but said he could do more to help with North Korea.

“He could do a little bit more,” Trump said while appearing next to French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump added that he and the Chinese president were working together on trade, something that has come under scrutiny as of recent given China’s economic ties to North Korea.

Trump’s comments came a little over a week after North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States. Pressure has mounted on China to restrict commerce flowing into its hermetic neighbor.

In spite of Trump’s likely frustration with China, Trump called its president a “friend” and “great leader,” for whom he had “great respect.”

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley hinted shortly after North Korea’s missile launch that she would propose new sanctions on the communist regime.

According to Reuters, two senior U.S. officials confirmed that the U.S. was readying new sanctions on Chinese businesses that engage in commerce with North Korea.
