Trump Says Comey’s Leaking was ‘So Illegal’

President Donald Trump accused former FBI Director James Comey Monday of breaking the law when he leaked information from memos about his meetings with Trump to the media.

“James Comey leaked CLASSIFIED INFORMATION to the media. That is so illegal!” Trump tweeted.

Although Comey has said he viewed those memos as private documents with which he was free to do as he pleased, the FBI has a different view.

When the seven memos Comey wrote were shown to Congress recently, the FBI said that they were all government documents. The Hill reported that four of the memos contain classified information.

FBI policy forbids an agent from sharing classified information without prior written permission, and all records created during official duties are government property.

Although neither Comey nor the FBI commented on this newest revelation, Columbia University professor Daniel Richman, a Comey friend who leaked part of one memo to The New York Times, told Fox News it was “a non-story.”

“No memos were given to the press, and no memos were classified at the time I received them,” Richman said, adding that the physical memo was never shared, only its “substance.”

“That was not classified at the time, and remains unclassified,” he said.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, however, called the revelation an “incredible bombshell.”

“The boy scout, choir boy defense doesn’t hold up here because if it contains classified information, he is apparently violating, at the very least, what all FBI members sign — they sign a document saying you will not do something like this. He was the director of the entire bureau,” Conway said Monday on Fox & Friends. “The irony to me, anyway … is that this is exactly the problem that Hillary Clinton had with her illegal server — the handling of classified and confidential information that Jim Comey was meant to investigate, if not prosecute.”

Conway added that Comey was “admitting under oath, handing over classified information through ‘private recollection’ – it doesn’t matter what he calls it, it matters what it is.”

Conway also said Comey was very clear that he leaked information to trigger the appointment of a special counsel.

“If people go back and listen to him under oath, he is admitting what his intent was,” Conway said. “You couple that with the fact that this was classified information, I think this is what the story should be – not all this nonsense about Russian collusion and what not.”
