Convenience Store Owner Sentenced to Prison for Killing Man Who was Robbing His Store

A 31-year-old Washington state convenience store owner has been sentenced to eight years in prison for killing a man who was robbing his store.

The incident occurred on March 25, 2016 when Pacific Quick Shop owner Min Sik Kim went outside to ask a group of men to stop loitering.

As he was outside, Jakeel Rashon Mason, 21, tried to steal cigarettes from behind the counter, Fox 13 reported.

Kim returned to the store and pointed a gun at Mason who put his hands up. The store owner then grabbed Mason and pushed him further into the store, holstering his weapon.

Kim punched Mason and the two of them started to wrestle each other until the thief got free and tried to escape.

Kim raised his weapon and fired two shots, hitting Mason in the back. Mason died before medical help got to the scene, according to Fox 13.

Five weeks prior to the shooting of Mason, Kim’s wife was shot in the stomach during a robbery, according to the Washington Post. It was something Judge John Hickman kept in mind during sentencing.

“I’m here to take responsibility for my actions in taking Mason’s life,” Kim, who pleaded guilty to the murder, said during sentencing. “I accept the consequences. I did not have the right to take his life.”

Mason, the man who Kim shot, was arrested as one of two men responsible for the attempted kidnapping of a 6-year-old girl in 2014, KOMO reported.

The prime suspect, Jakeel Rashon Mason, was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment.

The girl, Savanna Norman, was able to get free because she fought back against Mason and his accomplice.

According to court reports it Mason took a plea deal.

He was arrested again in 2015 for second-degree burglary.

The judge in Kim’s murder case decided that deadly force was not necessary, but it’s tough to argue that the neighborhood isn’t safer because of his action.

The sentence came days after many alleged a racial hate crime when a white man killed two black men who stole his brother’s dirt bike.
