Senate Democrats Ask for Obstruction of Justice Investigation After Comey Testimony

Two leading Senate Democrats pushed the chamber’s Judiciary Committee on Friday to expand its on-going Russia investigation to include whether or not any obstruction of justice occurred in relation to former FBI Director James Comey.

On Friday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) issued a statement recommending that Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) use his subpoena power if necessary to “investigate all matters related to obstruction of justice.”

Differing opinions arose to whether President Donald Trump obstructed justice after he fired the head of the agency investigating ties between Russia and his associates. Obstruction of justice, if proven, could be an impeachable offense.

Feinstein stated:

It is my strong recommendation that the Judiciary Committee investigate all issues that raise a question of obstruction of justice. These issues should be developed by our legal staff, presented to us, and be subject to full Committee hearings.

The California senator sits on the Judiciary Committee with Sen. Patricy Leahy (D-Vt.), who The Hill reported quickly backed her request for further investigation. “The American people deserve answers,” Leahy tweeted on Friday:
