Schieffer: Trump ‘Actually Sounded Presidential’ in Saudi Arabia Speech on Terrorism

On CNN, Sunday morning, veteran television journalist Bob Schieffer was brought on after president Donald Trump’s speech in Saudi Arabia about terrorism. With Trump staying on message throughout, Schieffer was largely positive on his performance.

“Today, you saw a very different President Trump: he actually sounded presidential,” Schieffer said. “You may agree or disagree with what he said, but he sounded like a president. He laid out his vision, he called for help from those in the Muslim world. It was a much different kind of presentation.”

Schieffer also noted that Trump should pay close attention to the largely positive response to the speech after a weekend with no highly charged tweets.

“I think that very few people would disagree with me when I say he helped himself today,” Schieffer continued. “He didn’t sound like the guy at the end of the bar popping off. He sounded like someone who had actually thought about what he was going to say before he said it.”

Schieffer did note that he was not trying to lessen any of the other news stories about President Trump that have dominated coverage over the past week.

“I’m not trying to normalize him in any way,” he said. “I’m trying to do what reporters do, and that’s report and try to emphasize what’s important here. I have many questions about this policy. For one thing, is he gonna set off an arms race in the Middle East? Is Russia gonna now begin selling arms in Iran?”

In spite of such concerns, though, Schieffer felt he needed to relay what he saw. “This was a different presentation today.”
