Comey Declines Senate Intelligence Committee’s Invitation to Testify

The latest development in the saga surrounding the firing of former FBI Director James Comey created a new wrinkle on Friday afternoon.

In the aftermath of his termination, he had been expected to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee next week. However, it now looks like that hearing is not to be.

Politico’s Austin Wright reports that Comey has declined the invitation, citing committee aides. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Virg.) later confirmed the story on CNN.

Perhaps the most curious factor, Comey was invited to testify in a closed session on Tuesday, so there would be relatively little public scrutiny of his performance in the hot seat.

The testimony, while it would not have been public immediately, if ever, likely would have helped smooth over some of the confusion coming from the conflicting public statements by President Donald Trump and his administration.

That’s before you even get into Trump seemingly trying to influence Comey by referring to “takes” of their conversations.
