UK Prime Minister Isn’t Afraid of Using Nuclear First Strike – In Fact is a Big Fan of It

If the action requires it, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is prepared to use nuclear weapons in a first-strike attack, Newsmax reported.

May’s defense secretary, Michael Fallon, issued a dire warning to use Britain’s enemies on the “Today” program on BBC Radio 4. You can listen here.

He didn’t specifically say what would warrant a nuclear strike, but he did tell listeners that the nuclear weapons don’t serve as very good deterrence if the enemy knows what to avoid. That would defeat the purpose.

“In the most extreme circumstances, we’ve made it very clear that you can’t rule out the use of nuclear weapons as a first strike,” Fallon said when asked what circumstances would warrant the use of nuclear weapons by the United Kingdom.

He explained how specifying the circumstances that would warrant a first strike would be a huge mistake.

“They are better not specified or described, which would only give comfort to our enemies and make the deterrent less credible,” he said. “The whole point about the deterrent is you’ve got to leave uncertainty in the mind of anybody who might be thinking of using weapons against this country.”

“We use the deterrent every single day. That’s what it does. It deters day and night. Every single day of every single year. We have a nuclear submarine out there as our deterrent, as our protection.”
