Trump Picks New National Security Advisor

In the wake of General Michael Flynn’s recent resignation as National Security Adviser, now comes word that President Donald Trump has already picked a replacement.

CBS News reports that Trump has offered the job to Vice Admiral Robert Harward, a man whose resume suggests he is more than qualified for the position:

Harward, a 60-year-old former Navy SEAL, served as deputy commander of U.S. Central Command under now-Defense Secretary James Mattis. He previously served as deputy commanding general for operations of Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Harward has also commanded troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan for six years after the 9/11 attacks. Under President George W. Bush, he served on the National Security Council as director of strategy and policy for the office of combating terrorism.

Reportedly, Harward has not yet accepted the offer. Deputy National Security Adviser K.T. McFarland, whom Flynn had selected, will retain her position.

At yesterday’s White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Sean Spicer maintained that Flynn’s conversations were not themselves legally objectionable, but that by “misleading” Vice President Mike Pence, he had simply lost the White House’s trust.
